Beer Theft Suspects Ejected From SUV After Running From Police

Friday, May 2, 2008 – updated: 1:02 pm EDT May 2, 2008

A police chase in Umatilla ended with a violent crash and four people were thrown from an SUV early Friday morning. Their bodies were scattered in someone's front yard along County Road 450.

The chief of police is asking two area stores to check their surveillance tapes and inventory to see if the beer they found in the vehicle was stolen. The driver of that vehicle lost control on the road, nicked a tree, took out a stump and the SUV landed just 20 steps from a home's front door.

Kim Dowd didn't know what the loud sound was that woke her up in the middle of the night.

"[It sounded] like they were coming through the house, yeah," Dowd said.

The four guys in their teens and early 20s were driving down Country Road 450 near West 9th Street (see map) in an SUV around 2:30 Friday morning. Officers on routine patrol were trying to pull over another vehicle, but the driver in the SUV took off, speeding down the road.

Officers got suspicious and chased them. The police chief believes they got scared, because they stole beer from one of the local stores.

"It wasn't that much to warrant somebody running. I don't even think it was a case," said Chief Douglas Foster.

Their vehicle lost control, flipped several times and ended up in Dowd's yard. All four were thrown from the vehicle and landed all over the front yard. Dowd's neighbor rushed over. She could hear one of them moaning for help.

"He was just kind of laying, like, over here in this area," said eyewitness Pat Depner.

The four were flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center and were reportedly in stable condition. The men could face serious charges for a minor crime they may have gotten away with.

Dowd is just happy the car didn't land any closer to her home.

"I pray every night that the Lord keeps us safe and he does," she said.

The police chief said he is not ready to release the names yet in case their conditions take a turn for the worse, but he said they will likely face charges for running from police and possibly petty theft.
