Boy To Have Leg Amputated After Crash On Personal Watercraft

Posted: 7:42 am EDT May 5, 2008Updated: 9:28 am EDT May 5, 2008

A ten-year-old boy is recovering after he was badly injured in a watercraft collision. Investigators say the boy was riding with his uncle on Biscayne Bay in South Florida on Sunday when they collided with a man and woman on another watercraft.

The boy's leg was crushed and his foot was severed during the crash. Eyewitnesses say the man and woman took off.

A Good Samaritan helped pull the boy from the water and called for help

"I was terrified because the injury was so severe and the cut on his foot was huge," said Sandra Herrera, the Good Samaritan who helped the boy to safety.

Officials say the boy's injuries were so severe that his leg will have to be amputated from the knee down. The boy's uncle suffered a broken leg.
