Listeners Say Pirate Radio Station Invading Orange County Airwaves With Profanity

Wednesday, May 7, 2008 – updated: 9:08 am EDT May 7, 2008

It is hip-hop, it is hardcore and it is illegal. Channel 9 uncovered an underground radio station with a strong signal that is broadcasting over the Orange County airwaves without a license.

The people who operate the pirate radio station even advertise for it on the Internet. Some people say the radio station is great because it helps promote local artists.

Others say they don't like all the profanity the underground dj's use and they want the illegal station shut down.

"For most people, that's what they like, that's why they play it," said Phillip Smith, a radio listener.

But not everyone agrees with Smith.

"I don't want my children to hear stuff like that on the radio," said Naima Wilkie, a concerned parent.

The FCC could issue fines that are typically around $10,000 for the operators of the station. The FCC would have to contact a law enforcement agency to actually shut the station down.
