Shark Bites 6-Year-Old's Leg Along New Smyrna Beach Coast

Posted: 11:57 am EDT May 7, 2008Updated: 6:07 pm EDT May 7, 2008

A 6-year-old from Deltona was bit by a shark on New Smyrna Beach late Wednesday morning. The child was standing in water nearly waist-deep when he felt something bump him.

The boy suffered cuts and bite marks and was taken to Bert Fish Memorial Hospital. Rescuers believe he'll need a few stitches, but will be okay.

The attack happened near 27th Avenue in New Smyrna Beach (see map), a few miles south of the surfing area where bites regularly occur.

On Monday, Eyewitness News reported on residents' concerns that nearby dredging is stirring up murky water and that's what sharks like to hide in. Wednesday's bite did occur in murky water.

It was the 11th bite of the year.
