ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- One half of the couple dubbed "Bonnie and Clyde" made his first appearance in court Friday morning. Andrew Gaskell, 29, and Erika Hein, 37, are accused of a crime spree that led deputies on a wild chase through Orange and Seminole counties Thursday afternoon.

Eyewitness News followed the chase from the sky and on the ground as it unfolded. The two were wanted for car theft, but investigators say the couple is responsible for at least 28 crimes.

Gaskell was in court Friday morning trying to get out on bond, but his partner in crime was not. Both were denied bond in the hearing, but it was unclear why Hein did not appear. Regardless, both will likely in jail for the foreseeable future.

Gaskell, apparently worn out from all the action Thursday and a long night in jail, yawned throughout the first appearance hearing Friday. It was much less exciting than the car chase that landed him behind bars.

It was an hour and a half of cat and mouse with cops Thursday that ended with a dramatic foot chase and tasering on an Orange County sidewalk. Because of all the fleeing and the number of crimes the duo is accused of, the judge felt it necessary to keep both behind bars.

"The court has determined that there will be no bail, because the court has determined that there is no condition of release that can reasonably protect the public," the judge said.

Cassandra Yehnert lived next to Gaskell and Hein last summer. She described an abusive relationship fueled by drugs. While pregnant, the Department of Children and Families took Hein's 6-year-old daughter and then her newborn, as well, when it was determined the infant was born addicted.

"We helped them move out. I found a syringe in the bedroom. We did everything we could to help them. Tried to get her into a shelter for battered women, because he would beat her," Yehnert said.

As for the reason behind Hein's absence, it's possible that she's being treated in the jail's medical ward and unable to appear. She was curled up in a ball on the street after trying to slit her wrist as deputies arrested her Thursday, but information about her medical condition is not a matter of public record per HIPAA laws.
