Grandma Accused Of Leaving Baby In Hot Car Leaves Jail

Posted: 4:52 pm EDT May 9, 2008Updated: 7:53 pm EDT May 10, 2008

A Titusville grandmother accused of leaving her 3-month-old grandson locked in a hot car posted a $2000 bond and left the Brevard County Jail Saturday morning. Police say she left the child while she test-drove a new car.

As she left the jail, 47 year old Sandra Hayes apologized for leaving the infant in the car, but said it was an honest mistake that could happen to anybody.

Investigators believe the baby was in the car for as long as 30 minutes on a 90-degree day, Friday. The baby, so far, has not shown any injuries as a result.

Late Friday afternoon, Hayes was led into the Titusville Police Department to be booked.

Police said, just after noon Friday, Hayes went to the Brevard Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge dealership in Titusville to test drive a car. She went in, somehow forgetting the child in the car seat. Police said she actually went back to get her driver's license out of the car and left the child in the car a second time, with doors locked and the window's rolled up.

"On a day like today, the baby is very fortunate. So far there aren't any obvious injuries to the child yet," said Lt. Todd Hutchinson, Titusville Police Department.

Police said it was Hayes who realized she left her 3-month-old grandson in the car alone in the middle of the test drive. When they got back to the dealership, his skin was red and he was covered in sweat. He was rushed to Parish Medical Center where he was examined.

Police are trying to figure out how Hayes could leave the child in the car not once but twice. The Department of Children and Families is also investigating. The child is now in the custody of his mother.
