Man Sentenced To Death For The Violent Killing Of Girlfriend

A killer who set his girlfriend on fire was sentenced to death late Monday morning. Dane Abdool was found guilty earlier this year in the pre-meditated, burning death of Amelia Sookdeo.

When the judge read the sentence to the courtroom, Dane Abdool showed no emotion. But the families of both the victim and Abdool were highly emotional during and after the sentencing. Even the judge showed emotion as she sentenced the 21-year-old man to death.

"May almighty God have mercy on your soul," said Circuit Judge Lisa Munyon.

Orange County Circuit Judge Lisa Munyon explained her reasoning point by point for more than 30 minutes. One of her reasons for sentencing Dane Abdool to death was the cruelty and the excruciating pain that was inflicted when he burned 17-year-old Amelia Sookdeo to death. She could have suffered for up to two minutes before losing consciousness.

The other reason Munyon gave was the cold, calculating way in which Abdool planned the killing, buying the gasoline and duct tape while she was waiting in the car.

Abdool was stone-faced as he walked steps closer to death row. Sookdeo's grandparents spoke for her family and they were full of emotion.

"He don't care about life, he don't care. If he did care then he would have taken her into consideration. There is no consideration. He don't care," said Jack Sookdeo, Amelia's grandfather.

"My house was full yesterday with all the rest of the grandchildren and she was not there," added an emotional Mavis Sookdeo, Amelia's grandmother.

The judge rejected the defense's arguments that Abdool had a very tough life from almost every aspect which affected his ability to think things through and solve problems.

Abdool has many opportunities to appeal the death sentence which will most likely take more than ten years to be carried out.
