PALM BAY, Fla. -- More than 100 people were staying in the only Red Cross shelter open in Palm Bay Tuesday morning. They hoped to go home Monday night to check on their homes, but officials said that wouldn't happen until Tuesday morning at the earliest.Officials say many neighborhoods are still not safe. Tuesday morning at the shelter there were 114 people who don't even know if they had a place to live.Judy Dillon and her family left their three bedroom home in the Bayside Cogan neighborhood to run errands Monday. The fire kept them out and they were never allowed to go back home."No matter which way we approached our home, we just couldn't get back there," Dillon said.People staying in the shelters were taking advantage of the food, snacks and water. But it's hard for them to sleep because they're worried all they have left are the clothes on their back."Everything we have is there. Of course, some things are irreplaceable, but," Dillon added. It was hard for volunteers to calm fears, especially after everyone learned they wouldn't be allowed to check on their homes Monday night because of the fire danger."Not only is it dangerous out there, but they're trying to keep them out of the firemen's way, too," said Nancy O'hara, a Red Cross worker.Dillon and her family understand that. And for right now they're going to be patient and grateful for what they know they do have left."You gotta be thankful for what you have. Family," said Ryan Ford, an evacuee.A schedule has been laid out for everyone at the shelter. First thing Tuesday morning they will eat breakfast.
