Wildfire Victim Cooks Breakfast For Others At Palm Bay Shelter

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 – updated: 5:11 pm EDT May 13, 2008

Nearly 200 people are now waiting out the wildfires at the only Red Cross shelter set up in Palm Bay. A few families at Our Lady Of Grace Catholic Church have already learned their homes were destroyed.

VIDEO REPORT: Shelter Packed In Palm Bay As Fire Victims Look Ahead

It's humbling to sit and talk with people who know they have nothing left but the clothes on their back. Eyewitness News reporter Daralene Jones talked to one victim who decided to roll up his sleeves and help everyone else.

Paper towels, food, blankets, clothes, toiletries, volunteers have just about everything the fire victims need at the shelter. In the middle the volunteers, Eyewitness News found one of the victims cooking breakfast for everyone else Tuesday morning.

"What made you say, 'I got to get out there and do something?'" WFTV report Daralene Jones asked fire victim Mark Shephard at the shelter Tuesday.

"Honestly, I don't know. It makes me feel good and keeping my mind occupied on something other than everything, losing everything in my house," Shephard said.

Gloria Patrick and Debbie Ellet can't find anything to take their minds off watching their home burn. They only had enough time to grab Ellet's cane. They need anything they can get from the Red Cross, because they have no insurance.

"I had items in that house from my daughter who's deceased. I can't replace those," Patrick said, crying.

Even though Shephard is trying not to think about what will happen next, he is believing in the back of his mind that something good will come out of this..

"Where there's a will, there's a way and God has his hands on everything. Everything happens for a reason," he said.

Late Tuesday morning, Eyewitness News learned a second shelter is being opened at Central Baptist Church, 2503 Country Club Road, Melbourne (map). This shelter will open at 2 p.m. Tuesday and is for general population. It is also available for special-needs care, if needed.

For shelter information, Brevard County residents can call 211, or outside Brevard County, (321) 632-6688.
