ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Orange County middle school students will have to wait for school busses in the dark this fall. High school students will have to stay in class until four in the afternoon. Now thousands of parents and children are re-arranging their lives so the Orange County School Board can save money.Early Wednesday morning, Orange County School Board members decided to swap school hours for middle and high school students. Some parents say they may even have to move now because they just can't make the new schedule work. The wake up call will come to two hours earlier for middle school kids next year."It's going to be hard for me to wake up so early," said sixth grader Kyndall Webster.Chantal McCoy thinks it will be good for her seventh grader."For their bodies, for their minds, I like the time change," she said.In a tight, controversial move, the Orange County School Board voted 4-3 to swap start times next year. High schools will begin at 9:30am and let out at 4:00pm. Middle school will start at 7:30am and let out at 1:50pm.For Marsha Jefferson and her high school daughter, the extra hours of sleep won't be worth it."I'm just going to have to push everything back. I'm going to be late for work," said eleventh grader Tiana Edwards. One parent told Eyewitness News some high school kids have to work and this could force them to choose between school and a job.The swap will take 37 buses out of service with a projected $6 million savings the first year and $2 million in subsequent years. Board member Karen Ardaman voted against it and believes cuts can be made elsewhere and some parents agree."Homework, she has to get prepared for the next day, chores around the house she has to do," said parent Marsha Jefferson.Eyewitness News also spoke to a board member who voted for the swap and wasn't willing to lose another teacher or start cutting athletic programs. She felt the time change was the only answer.
