Pearlman Wants Sentence Delayed

POSTED: 9:19 am EDT May 17, 2008

Music mogul Lou Pearlman has asked to delay his sentencing for an elaborate fraud scheme so he can promote a new band.

In court documents filed Friday Pearlman's attorney asked that his client's sentencing date of May 21 be pushed back so Pearlman can develop the pop band US5. If Pearlman develops his new band, he could reap profits that would in turn benefit victims of his fraud, his attorney argued in the documents.

A telephone message left at his attorney's office after hours was not immediately returned.

Pearlman is the one-time architect of the boy bands the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync. He has pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiracy, money laundering and making false statements during a bankruptcy proceeding.

The plea was the result of a lengthy federal probe alleging he bilked investors and banks out of more than $300 million. Pearlman faces up to 25 years in prison and a $1 million.
