ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- County commissioners are expected to discuss a plan Tuesday that could lead to a $1 billion expansion of the Orange County Convention Center. The goal is to build an entertainment megaplex that rivals Las Vegas. The plan calls for restaurants, an amphitheater, as well as four star hotels and shops along the water, similar to what is found in San Antonio's River Walk area.Developer Marc Watson wants to build on the north side of the convention center. He said the deal is worth $40 million, but he wants the county to use the funds to build pedestrian bridges to connect it with the existing structures.Las Vegas has pedestrian bridges, but it does not connect the convention area with food and hotels."It will be the greatest urban convention meetings destination in the world," said developer Marc Watson.Watson has had architects working on a plan for the space since 2005. Private investors would have to spend $1 billion for the plan.Watson wants the new convention district to open by the summer of 2011.
