Deputies Pull Over Wrong Guys, Create I-4 Traffic Mess

Wednesday, July 2, 2008

A huge crime scene shut down I-4 in Orange County late Wednesday morning, but it turned out the men deputies detained on the interstate were not the ones cops were looking for.

Orange County deputies temporarily closed I-4 westbound at John Young Parkway when they pulled over a car they thought was used in a burglary on Glenmont Lane near Colonial and the 417.

"We had a female in the home. We had someone try to enter her home. Apparently she interrupted the burglary to the point where the suspect fled," explained Jim Solomons, Orange County Sheriff's Office.

According to the sheriff's office, the woman who dialed 911 spoke only broken English. Deputies said that the frantic nature of the call only added to the confusion and the handcuffing of the wrong guys. Deputies let them go after the victim herself showed up and couldn't identify them.

"Unfortunately, it's sometimes the price of doing business. We regret that it happens, but it does happen," Solomons said.

Investigators have few leads right now. The homeowner stated the burglar wasn't armed and she was not hurt.
