Thursday, July 3, 2008 – updated: 5:57 pm EDT July 3, 2008

It was still light outside Wednesday night when a driver swerved off US-27 in the Four Corners area and struck and killed a pregnant woman walking along the side of the road. The driver kept going.

Investigators have no doubt the hit and run driver knew what she did. She was confronted at a gas station by a witness who told her, "You just hit a woman." She said, "No I didn't" and drove off.

At 34, Jennifer Prokop was already the mother of three and the Polk County Sheriff's Office said the Davenport woman was pregnant when she was struck and killed by the driver of a red Ford Explorer along Highway 27 near Polo Park Boulevard (see map).

From surveillance pictures taken at a nearby Kangaroo Store gas station, it should have been obvious to the driver she hit something.

"They need to do something," said Patrick Riker, who lives in the same Bimini Bay neighborhood as Prokop.

Prokop just moved in last week, but for months she worked with Qasir Malik at Diromio's Italian Restaurant.

"She was trying to establish herself. She was very happy to get an apartment last week. She was asking who had pots or pans," Malik said.

All of her plans came to an abrupt halt less than a mile from where she worked and lived. Prokop wasn't even on the roadway when she was struck and killed. Deputies said the hit and run driver came up on the shoulder.

Prokop's relatives in Wisconsin are devastated. They said she was a woman who helped anyone and they hope someone will help deputies now. The suspected driver is described by deputies as a thin, Caucasian woman with blond hair.
