OCOEE, Fla. -- An Ocoee police officer bonded out of jail Thursday night after being charged with attempted sexual battery, battery and false imprisonment on a woman he met at a party on Monday.

As he walked out of jail, Sgt. Thomas Maroney told Eyewitness News he was wrongfully accused and thanked everyone who is supporting him. His attorney would not let Maroney say much else.

According the arrest affidavit, Maroney struck up a conversation with a woman at the party. The woman told investigators she believed he was drinking.

The victim said Maroney asked if she wanted to go for a walk and she accepted. As the two were walking around a nearby retention pond, Maroney suddenly turned around and pulled her pants down. He then touched her between the legs and the victim fell to the ground. Maroney began slapping her buttocks repeatedly, both with his hand and a leather belt. The woman told investigators she was crying and screaming throughout the incident.

According to the affidavit, the attack was interrupted by a phone call and Maroney released his hold on the woman. The victim then sent a text message to a friend who rushed to find her as Maroney fled the scene.

Maroney was once the community affairs director for the police department and most recently served as a sergeant on overnight patrol. He is currently on leave as the investigation continues.
