Two More Cities To Start Using Cameras To Fine Red Light Runners

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. -- It could be cameras, not cops, catching red light runners in Seminole County. When the cameras capture tag numbers, violators face hefty fines.Neighboring cities Casselberry and Winter Springs are the latest to approve plans to install red light cameras. They'll go at intersections along state roads 434 and 436. Both cities plan to fine the drivers caught on camera."It's no longer that they have to look for a police officer. They are now watched by a camera," said Capt. Kevin Brunelle, Winter Springs Police Department.Winter Springs is going to put its first round of cameras at its most dangerous intersections along State Road 434, like at Tuskawilla where last year there were 28 crashes, Winding Hollow where there were 17 crashes, and Vista Willa and the 419, both sites of 10 crashes. Cameras will also be added to the intersections with state road 434 near Hayes and Edgemon. In Casselberry, the locations have not been approved yet, but police also want them in the city's most dangerous intersections. State Road 436 at Howell Branch, Red Bug Lake Road, Winter Park Drive, Button and 17-92 are the worst five. The fines for red light runners will be $125. Both police departments will cite red light runners with code violations instead of moving violations, since the state has not yet passed a red light camera law."We're not looking at this as a revenue issue. We're looking at this as a traffic safety light issue and trying to utilize the resources of staffing that we have," explained Casselberry Police Chief John Pavila. Both police departments expect the cameras will be installed by sometime this Fall.Currently, there is no law that allows cities to fine drivers caught on camera running red lights. State lawmakers were considering the law earlier this year, but they did not pass it. Still, Apopka, Palm Coast and Palm Bay are fining drivers anyway when they're caught on camera.
