City Of Debary Considering Using Deltona's Police Department

Posted: 9:08 am EDT July 17, 2008

Another city in West Volusia County may drop the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. Deltona is already considering starting its own police force.

DeBary's mayor, George Coleman, says his city would consider starting its own police force. Both cities say they are concerned about the increase in fees the sheriff's office is charging for law enforcement service.

Mayor Coleman said he has also spoken with Deltona about using Deltona's police force to provide service instead of the sheriff's office.

"What's best for our city is what we're going to do. And it will take a lot of work to find out what it is," said Coleman.

The sheriff's office says there are some legal hurdles that make it nearly impossible for one city to use another city's police force and says it would be extremely expensive to start a new police department.
