VIDEO REPORT: Judge Sends Teacher To Jail For Buying Beer
"I don't remember offering, but I, I'm sure I implied I would get anything that they needed," 30-year-old Emily Meyer told the judge. After pleading no-contest to the crime Friday, a judge sentenced her to 30 days in jail. She's the fourth Brevard County resident sent to jail for throwing a party for minors in the past two years. Despite her plea, her former principal and two other teachers asked the judge to keep her out of jail.Meyer told the judge in court that she had a drinking problem, but she pleaded with the judge that she learned her lesson and even her principal said she shouldn't go to jail."Penny said to me several times, I don't want a party at my house," Meyer said.Meyer tried to explain how she ended up hosting a party for high schoolers when she was supposed to be house-sitting and looking after a 16-year-old girl and her younger brother. The former Saturn Elementary School teacher was captured on a Wal-Mart surveillance camera after agreeing to buy the girl's friends a keg."I know I was lucid enough to think to myself and to say out loud to my boyfriend at the time, 'I'm going to hell for this,'" she said.Meyer said the teenagers couldn't pay her back, so she suggested charging party goers $5 for a cup. She said she thought it was just going to be the girl's closest friends modeling lingerie for each other, but the party grew and grew."At the beginning of the party, I had a bag and I was collecting keys, because I thought all the kids were going to be sleeping over," she explained. At her sentencing, two teachers and her former principal testified she was an excellent teacher who should not have to serve time in jail."It's your position that a teacher who provides, sells alcohol to teenagers, doesn't deserve any jail time?" the prosecutor asked Saturn Elementary Principal Michael Miller"I know Emily well enough to know that Emily's beating herself up this entire time," the principal said. The judge clearly disagreed and sentenced her to 30 days in jail. Meyer is currently attending AA and will be on suicide watch at the jail.Prosecutors are still proceeding with their case against Meyer's boyfriend, James Ali, who has also been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a party.Law enforcement might not have ever found out about the party but a Nintendo Wii game was stolen during the party along with the beer money and when they couldn't figure out who took the game the theft was reported to the sheriff's office.
