UCF-Affiliated Apartments Hit By Copper Thieves

Friday, July 18, 2008

At the same time the University of Central Florida joined forces with the Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation to get a handle on crime at some university-affiliated apartments, thieves struck again.

The Pegasus Point Apartments (see map) house hundreds of UCF students, dozens of whom endured a sleepless night, Wednesday.

"It was just hot. I thought the A.C. units broke down," said Baron Rennieson..

Nine units broke down at the hands of thieves who stripped their copper, leaving the students in those apartments hot and bothered during the toasty summer night.

Thursday, UCF announced it will soon team with the MBI to reduce crime.

"What we have to do is take a pro-active stance and do anything we can to reduce the drug trafficking," said UCF police Chief Richard Beary.

The property has recently installed surveillance cameras and added private security guards and gates. The property manager would not let Eyewitness News on the grounds to ask questions and a spokeswoman for the UCF Police Department said she wasn't familiar enough with the incident to comment.

Residents, though, say they're certain security is still lacking.

"When there's a line of cars out here, people trying to pull in, usually they'll just say, 'OK, all you guys can go,'" said Rachel King.
