Man Rents House From Fake Homeowner

Friday, July 18, 2008

A Marion County man rented a home for six months, before he realized his landlord was a fake. It turns out, that so-called landlord never owned the home on Olive Drive, near Belleview, and certainly didn't have the right to rent it.

Carl Kopsho keeps a roof over his head by customizing cars. But he lost his living arrangements in January when the house he was renting was foreclosed on. A few days later, he was in a local convenience store telling a friend what happened. A guy behind him in line introduced himself and said he had a house Kopsho could rent.

It was the house on Olive Drive. The man, who said his name was Tyrone Grian, wanted $800 a month and preferred cash. Kopsho signed a lease and has paid the rent for six months. But this week, a Marion County deputy came calling. It turns out Tyrone Grian does not own the house.

"This is not what I need," said Kopsho. "I'm not having a good year with houses here!"

Detectives believe Grian is a phony landlord using a phony name. The real owner of the home lives in New York and wanted to know why Kopsho was staying there. Now, deputies are looking for the mysterious Grian.

Kopsho is out a $1,600 deposit and maybe a place to live.

"I'm going to have to start looking online and find out who owns houses before I move into them," he said.

Kopsho says the true owner of the house told him he's not going to kick him out immediately.
