Man Saves Children, Pet From Burning Home

Sunday, July 20, 2008 – updated: 8:38 am EDT July 20, 2008

A raging fire destroyed not only an Orange County man's home, but his car and boat as well. The man had to race inside the burning building to save his children and the family pet.

"It was just everywhere. It was all around me at once," said Bill Glenn.

Glenn said he was working on his boat at his home on Ramblewood Road when he first saw flames. He said he tried to put out the fire, but realized it was spreading too quickly. So he ran inside to get his son and daughter.

"I was like 'Just get out of the house, get out of the house!'" he said.

But once they were outside, Glenn says his children realized what was happening and froze in their tracks, refusing to leave without their dog, Priscilla. Glenn says he yelled for the dog but believes she misunderstood and thinking she was in trouble, ran further into the house.

"I had to go back in for the dog," said Glenn. "I had to pick her up and carry her out. By the time, I was coming out, it was black smoke and you couldn't see two feet in front of your face."

In a matter of minutes, the fire consumed Glenn's boat, car, and half his home. A state fire marshal determined it was fueled by gas Glenn had been siphoning from his boat and ruled the blaze an accident.

The family is staying with friends.
