Off-Duty Deputy Saves Neighbors From Man With Gun

Monday, July 21, 2008 – updated: 9:00 am EDT July 21, 2008

An off-duty Seminole County deputy saved his neighbors from a man with a gun.

Officials said the off-duty deputy got a call for help from his neighbor Sunday morning. When he showed up he found the suspect holding them against a wall.

When the deputy showed his badge, the suspect took off only to return moments later. The deputy struggled with the man who had been at the home for drinks earlier in the night.

"The victim said that the suspect lives caddy-corner to them and they know the suspect enough to see him, but they really don't associate with him," said Cmdr. Rick Luckey of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

During the fight, the deputy dropped his gun and the two fought to get it. Officials said the deputy reached it first and pistol-whipped the man.

The suspect was arrested and taken to the hospital.
