BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- Two churches and a public library in south Brevard County were all spray-painted overnight with vicious, racist messages and hateful symbols. Melbourne police have been called to investigate.Buildings and mailboxes all up and down Lipscomb (see map) were hit by a particularly vicious vandal. At the Macedonia Baptist Church, which has been a cornerstone of the community for decades, the messages were scrawled across their marquee, doorways and even the church van.Down the street the Masters Workshop was also hit, as was the Martin Luther King Jr. library, where the letters were ripped off the wall and King's assassin's name was added in green spray paint. Both the Baptist Church and the library have called police to report the vandalism. No one can understand why someone would target these buildings."If they knew who God was, they wouldn't be doing stuff like this, a crime like this. This is just awful. We are trying to save souls and they are trying to destroy them," said church member Clara May.The director of the library said they are waiting for Melbourne police to take pictures before they can bring in emergency crews and start removing the racial epithets. One library patron told Eyewitness News it was unbelievable that racism would be scrawled on buildings like this in this day and age and particularly in the predominantly African American community.
