Officials: Shark Bites Teen's Left Foot

Posted: 6:41 am EDT July 24, 2008Updated: 10:13 am EDT July 24, 2008

Officials said a 15-year-old boy who was surfing on Florida's east coast was bitten on his left foot by a shark.

Beach patrol officials say the boy stepped on the shark when he fell on his surfboard Wednesday. Officials call this a provoked attack.

The teen was surfing on the New Smyrna Beach side of Ponce Inlet.

"He was lying on the beach crying with blood around him," said Shannon Zettler, the victim's sister.

Shannon Zettler says her brother surfs there all the time, but has never encountered a shark.

It was the 14th shark bite in Volusia County this year.
