LAKE MARY, Fla. -- A 35-year-old woman is accused of having a sexual relationship with her 17-year-old neighbor and the arrest has shocked her Lake Mary community.

Investigators say Kristie Mathis had sex with the teen at least ten times and the woman is a mother herself. She appeared before a judge for the first time Wednesday to face the accusations.

Seminole County deputies arrested Mathis on Tuesday when she tried to flee a traffic stop with the young man she's accused of molesting.

"She was always very friendly with us, and uh, that's just disturbing," a neighbor told Eyewitness News.

At her first appearance, the judge counted out the 12 charges of sex with a minor pending against Mathis and set conditions for the mother of three's possible bond.

"You may have contact with your kids," the judge said.

Investigators said Mathis lives in a Lake Mary home with her sons and husband, very near the home of her victim. They say she bought the victim alcohol and had sex with him until his parents finally became suspicious.

There are only nine homes on Mathis' cul-de-sac (see map), a tight-knit group. Many of the families who live there know Mathis and few wanted to speak.

Mathis told investigators she was a youth counselor for nearly a decade and was just a friend to her victim. She's denied having sex with him. But, at this point, neighbors worry most about Mathis' own young boys.

"I feel for her family. They're going to have a lot of sorrow and sadness ahead. I'm sorry for it," a neighbor said.

The judge set Mathis' bond at just more than $12,000. She said she'd hire her own attorney to represent her on the sex charges and charges that she fled from police.
