Gas Station Turns Off Pumps After Motorists Get Contaminated Fuel

Posted: 3:37 pm EDT August 4, 2008Updated: 6:10 pm EDT August 4, 2008

What's worse than gas at $4 a gallon? How about bad gas? In Brevard County on Monday, several cars stalled out after filling up at one gas station.

The drivers all filled up at a Kangaroo Express at the corner of Minton and Malabar in Palm Bay (see map). One right after another, drivers found themselves stranded, their cars sputtering all at once.

"As I started to drive off, my car started stalling. I pulled over to the side here and the person next me, the same deal, stalled right in the middle of the road," said customer Lincoln Bastien.

"Put $15 worth of gas in and this is as far as I made it, about three-quarters of a mile away," said customer Allen Welke.

All of the drivers had just filled up with 87 octane. When police started getting the calls, they realized the source and told the service station to shut their pumps down. Tow trucks picked up the cars after the drivers waited hours for answers from the gas station.

"We've been sitting here two and a half hours saying someone is coming and no one has come yet," said customer Ebony Polk.

The attendants refused to say whether they would take care of the problems created. The police along with gas station personnel looked into the underground storage tank. Eyewitnesses said the tank was just filled prior to the problems.

"The store just received a shipment at around 12:30 today," said Sgt. Jim Richmond, Palm Bay Police Department. "It looks like the fuel may have had excess water in the tank, but the store managers will have to contact the supplier to confirm."

So far, Kangaroo Express has only taken down the victim's personal information and told them that the company's risk management department will be in touch with them. So far, there's no word on how much the repairs will involve.
