Sheriff Says Women Should Arm Selves Against East Side Rapist

Posted: 4:40 pm EDT August 14, 2008Updated: 5:32 pm EDT August 14, 2008

The sheriff of Orange County says women should arm themselves against the East Side Rapist. He may have struck again in broad daylight on Wednesday. This time, the victim was a woman riding her bicycle near Kennedy Avenue and Gatlin (see map). Investigators released a composite sketch of the suspect late Thursday afternoon.

Detective said it does not appear to be related to the other cases based on suspect description, but the reality is, in every case, the attacker jumped out of woods in broad daylight and dragged his victim back into the woods.

Doris Weller's husband protected her Thursday, along with their dog. Her daily stroll takes her right past the woods where the latest attempted rape happened Wednesday night.

"I've been scared of walking by here. I never walk on that side. I come over on this side," Doris told Eyewitness News.

Deputies on horseback looked for clues Thursday in the woods the attacker jumped from. The case could be the fifth attack by the East Side Rapist in two years, considering it is possible that the murder of Nicole Ganguzza in Blanchard Park is related.

A deaf woman was attacked just a few miles away from Wednesday's crime. That rape attempt happened about a month ago.

"I don't want to scare the living bejesus out of people," Sheriff Kevin Beary said Thursday.

Beary weighed in on the frustrating trend and said it's an unfortunate fact that Orange County women have to learn to protect themselves.

"I'm a big fan of pepper spray, ladies. Get two cans. Practice with one," he said.

The latest victim was out of the hospital Thursday and likely talked to detectives Thursday afternoon to help develop a composite sketch. She was cut with what she believes is a knife.

While detectives say the suspect descriptions vary from case to case. They will not rule out the possibility that every single case was committed by the same man. The East Side Rapist always attacks just before the sun goes down.

Wednesday's victim was along Gatlin Avenue. It's just three miles (Goldenrod Road north of Curry Ford Road) from the place where the East Side Rapist tore off a woman's shirt last month. It's within 10 miles of two other attacks in 2006 (Econ south of University) and 2007 (Dean Road near Rivers Trail) and near Blanchard Park, where 26-year-old Nicole Ganguzza was grabbed and murdered in June.
