Woman Hit-And-Run Driver To Be Sentenced

Posted: 11:58 am EDT August 15, 2008Updated: 12:59 pm EDT August 15, 2008

More than three years after Thomas Bowen was killed on the side of I-95, his family could get the justice they are after Friday afternoon.

Mary Taylor-Christensen, 64, is being sentenced for hitting Bowen in Viera and driving away. Her blood-alcohol-level was nearly three times the legal limit at the time.

The judge set aside the entire day, and had to get the largest courtroom in the building to accommodate all the people who came to watch and testify. Mary Taylor-Christensen's attorneys are trying to make a case for why Christensen should not get the full 15 years she could get as part of the plea agreement she made last month.

Christensen's attorneys are trying to make the case that she was an abused woman going through a prolonged bitter divorce and self- medicated on anti-anxiety medication before driving a PT Cruiser down the interstate.

The crash in February of 2005 was unforgettable. She killed Thomas Bowen from Jacksonville who was changing the tire on his boat trailer on the side of I-95. Christensen drove off and only stopped after a good Samaritan boxed her car in.

Friday morning her niece Amy Gregory testified that Christensen told her she didn't remember any of it.

"She said the only thing she remembers is she went to go lay down to take a nap and the next thing she remembers is a brief flash of her being arrested, the next thing she physically remembers is her being in jail," Gregory said.

Two members of Christensen's family have said the woman is so remorseful she told them she would give her own life to get Bowen's back if she could.

Watching all of this is Thomas Bowen's family, who brought with them a number of people who will be testifying later Friday about why Christensen should get the maximum 15 years. Also on Friday a priest is supposed to testify by a live feed from The Betty Ford Clinic in California where Christensen went to rehab after the fatal crash.
