Casselberry Mom Accused Of Stealing From Her Child's Little League

Wednesday, August 27, 2008 – updated: 6:15 pm EDT August 27, 2008

A mother in Casselberry is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from her child's little league. She's even accused of using the league's credit card to fill her own car up with gas. The league might have to now turn away kids, because they don't have enough money.

Little league is all about fair play and following the rules. There's even a pledge that says so. Patricia Penn might want to read it. She's been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $4,000 from her own son's little league.

"Devastated, very disappointed, very hurt, this is somebody that has been part of the league for a long time," said league president Darrin Sink.

Sink noticed that thousands of dollars disappeared from the concession stand that Penn volunteered to run and her league credit card was maxed out with trips to gas stations and Sam's Club. When confronted by parents, they said Penn broke down and admitted to stealing the money.

"She said that times were very tough and, with gas prices, she couldn't, she just said times were tough," Sink said.

Now it's tough for kids. The league may have to delay it's season and, because the money is gone, some kids won't get scholarships and can't play.

"Unless we get funding in, we will be turning away children this year because of lack of funds," Sink said.

League officials said they don't want to see Penn on any of the fields again. She's been banned for life from volunteering for little league, but her children are welcome to play whenever they want.

The league is asking Penn to pay back the money. She's charged with larceny and is out on bond.
