County Commissioners Give Out Thousands In Bonuses To Aides

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

The budget crisis forcing Orange County to cut jobs and services isn't hurting some of the people who work for the county's commissioners. Eyewitness News discovered all but one county commissioner gave thousands of dollars in bonuses to aides, instead of returning the money to the county's general fund.

Orange County commissioners ordered 10 percent budget cuts and laid off 120 employees to make up a multimillion dollar shortfall.

But Eyewitness News found commissioners have extra money leftover in their own district funds. And in these tight budget times, all but one has decided to give their aides $40,000 in bonuses.

"When the county commissioners are whining they don't have enough money for other things and they got money for this, they should all take a pay cut," said former County Chairman Lou Treadway.

Commissioner Fred Brummer has about $15,000 left in his budget. He decided to give his aides $5,000 each on top of the 4.5-percent raise they got at the beginning of the year. Brummer will return some money to the general fund.

"My staff, they expect to put in extra hours," said Brummer. "They have to show up on Saturday morning."

Treadway says he never gave his aides bonuses. He believes all the extra money should go back to the general fund or other programs that may have gotten cut.

"They get a good salary as it is, so what do they get his for?" asked Treadway. "For showing up to work and answering the telephones and take accounts of constituent phone calls? To me, that does not warrant a five to seven thousand dollar bonus."

Commissioner Teresa Jacobs gave her aides bonuses last year but decided she would not give them any extra cash this year. She said she didn't think it was fair in light of the current state of the budget issues.
