Cleaning Service Accused Of Trashing House Due To Tenants' Race

Posted: 5:57 pm EDT September 8, 2008Updated: 6:12 pm EDT September 8, 2008

Instead of picking things up, a cleaning service in Clermont is accused of trashing someone's house, but despite the damage police are refusing to do anything about it.

The landlord admits she made a big mistake hiring someone off a roadside sign, but what she didn't expect is that the quality of the job depended on the race of her tenants.

"My goodness, I started shaking. I was petrified. I got stomach ache," the woman said.

The landlord doesn't want to be identified, but claims a cleaning service refused to clean bathrooms and a refrigerator because of the ethnicity of former tenants. The house was trashed, with garbage in every room, and the landlord blames an angry cleaning lady.

Every wall in every room was keyed and the hundreds of feet of scratches will require an entire paint job. The doors of appliances were all bent so they no longer close and twice someone emptied vacuum cleaner bags all over the house.

The situation started after the landlord discovered the cleaning service didn't clean up after a certain race.

"The way that she put it, and I quote, 'You didn't tell me. I find out from some other person that the people that used to live there is black. I don't like to clean after black, yuk,'" the landlord explained.

Deputies insisted the vandalism is a civil matter, but they intend to interview the cleaning lady. No one actually saw who committed the crime, but the landlord said she learned a hard lesson about racism and roadside signs.

"This is more than vandalism," she said.

Some neighbors said they saw a group of people at the home over the weekend. If they can identify anyone, it's possible someone could face charges, but not likely.

If you wonder about any company, always check with the Better Business Bureau. Keep in mind, companies that advertise with roadside signs are already breaking the law just by placing the sign.
