Historic Johnson's Diner Closes Due To Unpaid Taxes

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A popular downtown Orlando restaurant shut down Friday because of unpaid taxes.Johnson's Diner is normally bustles with local politicians and even some celebrities. But Friday, the owner turned away customers.The state of Florida revoked its certificate of registration."I'm disappointed because we was gonna eat breakfast this morning," said customer Charles Lewis.Eyewitness News first reported the historic diner was having tax problems in August. Records show from 2006 to March of 2008, the diner owed $84,000 in unpaid sales taxes. Officials say the diner owed $62,000 as of August '08. "We have not complied with all of the requirements that they asked and we're working to resolve them," said owner Clarence Taylor.Taylor's only option is try to pay off the rest of the taxes that he owes."For all of those who want to put a nail in our coffin, please don't do it just yet," he said.But a Department of Revenue spokesperson said it is not easy to re-apply for a certificate of registration. The state says it factors in past business practices.
