VIDEO REPORT: Campus Closed After Device Blows Up Inside Elevator
Five students had to be checked out by paramedics after the explosion and hundreds heard the boom in the three-story classroom building in Melbourne (see map).No arrests have been made, but an investigation source told Eyewitness News police said witnesses saw someone running from the elevator just before the explosion and police are looking for a specific person of interest.Hundreds of students and teachers huddled outside their classrooms looking for any word on the explosion that shut down the Melbourne campus."It was just loud, full of smoke everywhere," student Nick Gow told Eyewitness News.Gow was taking a test in a room next to the elevator where the device detonated."It was a very loud boom and followed by the sirens inside the building and then the faculty evacuated us as soon as possible," he said.Even students outside the building heard the loud bang. Investigators found the remnants of what appeared to be a powerful firework wrapped in paper and placed inside a glass container."We don't know if it was a prank or if someone was trying to harm someone. We certainly are looking into it," said Cmd. Ron Bell, Melbourne Police Department.Firefighters say the smell of sulfur filled the air. Five students and faculty members were evaluated for smoke inhalation but no one required hospitalization. The explosion left students stunned."My next class tomorrow is in that building is tomorrow. It's a little scary," eyewitness Cathryn Ellington said."Now, all of a sudden, everyone here is scared to go to their next class. It's not just this class or this building," eyewitness Sam Carter said.Administrators shut down the entire campus while police dogs looked for other devices. There are no surveillance cameras so police will have to rely on bomb remnants and eyewitnesses to figure out who is responsible.Classes were cancelled for the entire campus Thursday.
