Suspect Bares Face During Orlando CVS Robbery

Monday, October 6, 2008 – updated: 9:51 am EDT October 7, 2008

A robber didn't even bother to hide his face. He just walked up to the pharmacy counter at an Orlando CVS, put his gun down and demanded drugs.

RAW SURVEILLANCE: Robber Gets Away With Drugs At CVS
SPECIAL SECTION: Unsolved Crimes

It's the 50th pharmacy held up in Central Florida this year, but this time the thief did not want money. Investigators are hoping the surveillance video will help them catch the guy.

The robber, armed with a semi-automatic handgun, walked through the front doors of the 24-hour CVS store on Edgewater Drive in Orlando after drugs. Police said the robber put his gun on the pharmacy counter and demanded Oxycontin. According to police, the man got away with a large amount of the controlled drug.

"And then he left. We did call our K-9. They did a track. The track led to where he probably got in a car and left the area," explained Sgt. Barbara Jones, Orlando Police Department.

The robbery marks the 15th pharmacy robbery in Central Florida since the beginning of the year. In Orange County, there have been 21, with six in Brevard, nine in Volusia, ten in Seminole, two in Osceola and one each in Sumter and Marion.

"They are tying to give a service to people who may have to work a shift that they need to, to go to the store at one or two in the morning," Jones said.

A CVS spokesperson told Eyewitness News the Orlando store recently added surveillance cameras and more lighting outside in an effort to cut down on crime. Police said the man's getaway car was parked in the Citgo gas station parking lot right across the street.

If you have any information that could help police, you are asked to give them a call.

Pharmacies that stay open 24 hours a day are at a much higher risk of being robbed. Nearly 50 percent of all pharmacy crimes happen between midnight and 4:00am.
