DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. -- A man pulled from the surf in Daytona Beach Shores late Tuesday afternoon died. The 47-year-old man from Quebec was swimming near the beach approach at Minerva Road and A-1-A.People sitting out on the beach tried to help the man. They used boogie boards and headed into heavy surf to help two men who were in trouble. Minutes after pulling the two men from the water, beachgoers were quiet and out of breath. They had done everything they could do to save a swimmer, but it wasn't enough."This is probably the roughest surf I've been in," Rick Roberts told Eyewitness News.Roberts was on the beach with his five children and could see the men in trouble. Someone asked to borrow a boogie board from his son to try to save them and he went out to help, too, in chest high water and heavy surf."He got him on the board and when I got there I was able to help pull him in, cause he's a pretty good size man," Roberts said. The man was lifeless, Roberts said, and not breathing at all."There was a lady who jumped in and who must have known it because I didn't know CPR. She jumped in and by that time Beach Patrol was here and took over," Roberts said.Beach Patrol said there are currently perfect rip current conditions and the drowning happened right in between the two closest manned lifeguard stations.
