Rape Suspect May Be Responsible For More Attacks

Tuesday, October 14, 2008 – updated: 5:40 pm EDT October 14, 2008

Police say one man may be responsible for brutal attacks in an Orange County neighborhood.

Orange County deputies are looking for a man who forced a woman back into her house on Rio Lane and Grant Street (see map) and sexually assaulted her while her two young children were locked up in a nearby bedroom. The 28-year-old woman was on her way to take her kids to school.

At 7:00am, the woman walked out her front door with her 7- and 2-year-old. The gunman forced her back inside, locked her children in a bedroom and raped and robbed her.

"It's sad, she's a good person," said Chris Howell, a neighbor.

Police gathered evidence Tuesday morning they hope will lead them to the man that committed such a bold and brutal crime. The victim is being treated for the sexual assault and then helped police with a composite sketch of the man described as 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8, skinny, with dreadlocks to his shoulder, dark-skinned with a scar on his face.

Eyewitness News spoke to the victim's husband right as he learned the news.

"I see my friend. He told me someone raped my wife. I don't know what's going on. I don't see her yet," the man said.

Police were questioning one particular neighbor who said she saw the man try to break into her house a week ago. There was another sexual assault about a month ago, just a mile from the area, and Tuesday's suspect fits the same description. Earlier, police said the attacks were not related but have since said there is a possibility they are connected.

The children are with family members and detectives say they're very shaken by what happened.
