Brevard Deputy Appraiser Acquitted Of All Charges

Posted: 1:52 pm EDT October 31, 2008Updated: 9:08 am EDT November 1, 2008

A Brevard County judge acquitted Brevard County Deputy Property Appraiser Lance Larsen on charges he misused his office by giving tax breaks as political favors.

During the third day of Larsen’s trial, judge Charles Holcomb ruled prosecutors did not have enough evidence to prove the charges against Larsen and said enough was enough.

The last blow for prosecutors was when the judge would not allow them to have a witness testify that Larsen kept separate files for people he was allegedly favoring by lowering the value of their homes and property.

Prosecutors met with the judge in his chambers to discuss that issue and when they returned to court, the judge acquitted Larsen on seven counts of misconduct and one count of grand theft.

"The court does not feel that the state has proved a corrupt intent, therefore I feel compelled to grant the defense's motions," Holcomb said.

Larsen told Eyewitness News, "Just glad it's over... glad it's over."

Property Appraiser Jim Ford released a statement saying, "On behalf of the Property Appraiser’s office and its hard working employees, I am gratified that a Judge, having heard the State’s case, made a finding that we all knew would eventually be determined, that Mr. Larsen and this office have done nothing criminal. We have always afforded our taxpayers the right to have professionals review their valuations and to make sure that valuations were proper and all laws fairly applied. Do we make mistakes? Yes, we’re human, but we correct our mistakes when found, and always give taxpayers the benefit of the doubt.

I look forward to continue serving the community now that this chapter, generated by disgruntled employees has been revealed as a fraud on the public with extreme and unnecessary cost to the taxpayers."
