Officer Crashes Into Car, Three Hospitalized

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Charges may be filed against an Altamonte Springs police officer who crashed into the back of another car. Investigators said the 49-year-old officer, Mark Maupin, lost control of his cruiser on Maitland Boulevard (see map) and Rose Avenue Sunday.According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Maupin was traveling westbound on Maitland Boulevard when he lost control of his marked cruiser, started to spin around and crashed into the rear of a Honda Civic, which was stopped in the left turn lane at the intersection.

The collision sent the Civic through the intersection where it came to rest in the eastbound center lane. The police car continued through the intersection and stopped on the shoulder of the road.Both occupants of the Honda were transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center and were listed in critical condition. They were identified as 18-year-old Jennifer Hernandez of Apopka and 20-year-old Erskin Bell of Ocoee.Bell's parents said he was home visiting a friend for the weekend and said they were in shock."I'm just confused, a lot of pain. One would just never expect to hear news like this," said Erskin's mother, Phillipa Bell.Altamonte Springs police said Maupin wasn't responding to a call. His lights and sirens were off, but he could've been going after a speeder. Erskin, Hernandez and the officer all have serious head injuries."Erskin has always been a fighter, competitor," said Phillipa.Troopers said there were no eyewitnesses and they're trying to figure out how fast the officer was going."Right now I'd like to see my son doing better and everything else will unfold over the next couple of weeks," said Erskin's father, Erskin Bell Sr.Officer Maupin has been with the Altamonte Springs police department for 25 years. He suffered a skull fracture and was taken to Florida Hospital South.
