ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- The Wyndham, one of Orange County's largest employers, laid off hundreds of employees Thursday. The employees worked for Wyndham Corporate in three offices, two on South Park Circle (see map) and the other on John Young Parkway. The cuts were across the board. In the words of one spokesperson, it was a "top to bottom cut." That means people in departments like marketing and IT were told they had to go and it's all happening one week before Christmas."No news here." That's what security said as they swarmed Eyewitness News in the Wyndham parking lot and said to leave. For the second time in two months, Wyndham Vacation ownership confirmed it made another massive layoff, this time cutting about 300 people from the corporate offices in Orange County. About 200 others were let go in October. No one from the company would comment on camera, but a corporate spokesperson said, "It's a very difficult day and we're very disappointed and saddened that we have to do this."Over the course of several hours, employees were escorted to the parking lot one-by-one. Some came out with nothing but manila envelopes. Others carried boxes and exchanged hugs. Many seemed too distraught to talk to Eyewitness News, but one woman who was spared said her co-workers may have known about the possibility of more cuts for a week or two. Wyndham sent out an email warning of continued trouble in the timeshare business."We're not immune to what's going on with the economy, so I guess we just have to roll with the punches," one employee said.Wyndham told Eyewitness News those who were laid off Thursday will get severance packages, but they wouldn't discuss the details. It may also be why so few people were willing to talk to Eyewitness News about losing their jobs.Wyndham isn't the only vacation company laying off workers this holiday season. Wednesday night, Eyewitness News learned that 168 people were laid off at the Marriott Vacation Club International (read report) and the Blue Green Time Share Corporation laid off 182 people in Orlando last month.
