Victim's Boyfriend Tricks Suspect Into Arrest

Posted: 8:04 am EST January 2, 2009Updated: 10:57 am EST January 2, 2009

A Volusia County man accused of beating and robbing a woman was arrested thanks to a clever ploy. Deputies said James Smith Junior held up Melissa Koch as she rode her bike near New Smyrna Beach Tuesday.

Officers said Smith pistol-whipped Koch, stole her money and cell phone. However, the victim's boyfriend called the stolen phone and pretended he was looking for another man.

The boyfriend asked Smith if he wanted to buy some guns. Deputies said Smith took the bait and was arrested at the meeting point.
