The Coast Guard scoured the sea Friday looking for a cruise ship entertainer who fell overboard while posing for a picture. The ship was on its way to Port Canaveral.

Antonio Matabang has been lost at sea now for more than 36 hours. The Coast Guard has now searched more than 2,000 square miles.

Matabang fell the equivalent of eight stories. Experts told Eyewitness News, if you don't hit the water feet first, the fall alone could break bones or kill you.

At sun up Friday, the Coast Guard added more crews to the search for a missing entertainer who fell overboard while the Carnival Cruise ship Sensation was returning from the Bahamas. Eyewitnesses said 25-year-old Antonio Matabang of California was off-duty, standing on a railing for a photo, when he fell an estimated 82 feet into the ocean.

Wyatt Werneth, trained in ocean rescues, told Eyewitness News the fall alone could have left the man incapacitated.

"It could knock you unconscious if you were to hit it wrong, yeah, absolutely," he said.

Passengers said crew members threw life vests into the water, but they couldn't see if he was able to grab hold of one. The ship reversed course, but they were not able to find him

In 2007, there was a similar incident. An entertainer fell overboard on Carnival's ship Victory en route to Miami. Crew members were able to quickly locate that victim and pull him from the water alive.

Werneth said, if Matabang survived the fall, he would have to survive dehydration, hypothermia and most importantly be able to keep his head above water.

"If you hit the water and you are panicked, just like off the beach, you don't have to be that deep or that far out. People open their mouths and get hit with the wave and suffocate on the water," Werneth said.

The Coast Guard said they will re-evaluate Friday night whether to continue searching for him.
