Video Released Of Anthonys' P.I. Searching Remains Scene

Posted: 5:25 pm EST January 11, 2009Updated: 10:15 am EST January 13, 2009

Eyewitness News and WFTV.com were the first to obtain video showing George and Cindy Anthonys' private investigator knifing, poking, prodding and digging in areas where he possibly believed he would find Caylee Anthony's remains.

Sheriff's investigators and only a few others had seen the video until Eyewitness News obtained it (watch video | scene-by-scene images). The video could prove the Anthonys' private eye got inside information at the scene a month before Caylee's remains were found by detectives. The videotape and the Anthonys' private investigator's phone records could be the keys that link Casey Anthony to the wooded area.

Casey Anthony has been charged with murder in connection with her daughter Caylee's death.

Private investigator Jim Hoover shot the video of the Anthonys' private investigator, Dominic Casey, on November 15 and 16 at the scene where Caylee's remains were discovered a month later. Dominic Casey can also be seen at a nearby abandoned house moving things, cutting, digging and prodding.

At both locations, Mr. Casey was focused on groupings of concrete stones. He is seen talking on a cell phone throughout the tape and told Eyewitness News that he was talking to his sick daughter.

Mr. Casey can be seen on video sticking a metal rod into the ground at the crime scene mere feet from where Caylee's remains were later found. At the house, he forcefully knifed open black trash bags.

"He's almost animal-like," WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said as he viewed the tape. "It's more like, 'Let me find the hidden treasure down here,' than, 'Let's preserve the integrity of the crime scene, let's preserve the sanctity of the human remains.'"

Dominic Casey was focused on a grouping of concrete stones at the scene. His colleague, private investigator Jim Hoover, did not allow Eyewitness News to record the sound, but reporter Kathi Belich listened to the entire tape and clearly heard Dominic Casey say at one point on the tape, "It would be right here."

"He has to be referring to the body," Sheaffer said. "So the significance is, who is on the other end of that cell phone that's told him that these three stones are a point of reference?"

Hoover said it was obvious to him that Dominic Casey was getting inside information on his cell phone on November 15, although Dominic told Eyewitness News he was talking to his ill daughter at the time.

"What if there was a fingerprint left by the killer on that bag and because of the fact that he's ramming that rod through the bag could've destroyed the fingerprint?" Sheaffer questioned.

The actions could also have destroyed hairs, fiber and fluid from the killer that could have been in the trash bag that contained Caylee's remains.

Detectives from Orange County and the FBI are investigating the time and date stamps on the videotape and Dominic Casey's cell phone records as they strengthen their murder case against Casey Anthony.

"[It's] a big question and a big key to who killed this child," said Sheaffer. "Who was on the other end of that cell phone?"

Hoover said he has been cooperating with investigators since December 18 when he first realized that his videotapes had evidentiary value, but only allowed Eyewitness News to record portions of the video and didn't allow any recording of audio.

CASEY FORCED TO APPEAR IN COURT FOR HEARING

Casey Anthony was publicly seen Thursday for the first time in nearly three months and it was a legal snafu that dragged her out of her jail cell and into court. Casey failed to waive her right to sit in on Thursday afternoon's hearing where her lawyers fought for access to pictures of her daughter's remains.

VIDEO REPORT: Judge Makes Casey Attend Hearing

Casey was brought into the courtroom in shackles around 2:55 (images | raw video), nearly an hour and a half after the hearing began. The state argues she has to attend all her pretrial hearings. Since she did not formally waive her right to attend Thursday's hearing, Judge Stan Strickland made her come into court.

It was the first time Casey had been seen since she was formally charged with first-degree murder on October 14. Dressed in a blue jail jumpsuit, she showed no emotion and often times stared at the table during the court appearance.

Originally, Casey did not show up for the hearing, even though state statue requires defendants to attend all pre-trial hearings unless they make a written request to waive their right to attend, but Judge Strickland ordered her pulled from her cell.

Judge Strickland explained to her, from now on, if she wants to waive her right to attend she must put it in writing and it will be under the court's discretion.

Prosecutors called for the hearing and asked Judge Strickland to place restrictions on the photographs of Caylee's remains. The state was worried someone would get a hold of them and sell them to the tabloids.

Judge Strickland decided to put them in Jose Baez's custody and Baez agreed the photographs would not be used for profit and a secure website will be put into place so that only authorized people will have access.

A January 15 status hearing was canceled and a trial date has not been set. Jose Baez wants the case to move forward as soon as possible.

The judge made several other rulings in the case Thursday. Among them, prosecutors have 20 days to make hair found in Casey's car available for the defense to inspect. It's that hair that experts say belonged to Caylee and showed signs of decomposition.

The prosecution also has to produce the forensics report on Casey's car within 30 days. And, within 20 days, the defense will also get unedited copies of the 911 phone calls from the utility worker, Roy Kronk, who found the remains.

Caylee Anthony was 2 years old when she went missing in June, but her remains were not found until December. She had been missing for about a month before her mother reported it. Casey Anthony has been charged with first-degree murder and other charges.
