ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- The College of Engineering's associate dean is on suspension at the University of Central Florida and could soon be arrested Wednesday. Police say Dr. Jamal Nayfeh had an expensive taste for technology.Police told Eyewitness News, Nayfeh bought thousands of dollars worth of home entertainment equipment on the school's dime and borrowed more equipment from UCF without ever returning it.Among the $40,000 worth of items allegedly charged to Nayfeh's UCF credit card were a home theatre system with an 80-inch screen, high-def projection system and surround sound, 52-inch LCD TVs in each bed room and racks and racks of high-end audio equipment."The university must be disappointed in this kind of behavior from someone you trust," WFTV reporter Darrell Greene said to UCF spokesperson Grant Heston."The alleged behavior here goes against everything that UCF stands for," Heston said. The university spokesperson said Nayfeh, an associate dean for the College of Engineering, made the purchases in December and had all of that equipment installed in his home. UCF auditors found the purchases after the high-dollar amount was red-flagged."The individual has been suspended from the university. The legal process is running its course. And our intention now is to be reimbursed to the fullest extent possible," Heston said.Eyewitness News also learned that, during the investigation, UCF police found several pieces of high-end audio-visual equipment, including cameras, which were either reported missing or stolen from Nayfeh's engineering department.Investigators are still working on the case and would not comment, but a source told Eyewitness News Nayfeh would likely be arrested as early as Wednesday.Nayfeh lives in a gated community in Geneva. Eyewitness News wasn't able to reach him by phone or at home. All of the equipment in question was bought from Request Communications in Ocoee. Eyewitness News talked to the owner there who would only say he lost thousands of dollars in the alleged scheme by Nayfeh.
