Bomb Testing On New Location To Begin

The City of Orlando gave way to a request from the Army Corps of Engineers to search public parks for World War II-era explosives.

They're specifically concerned with Englewood Park, Englewood Neighborhood Center and Leroy Hoequist Park on the east side of Orlando.

The new search was linked to the Army's old chemical testing yard in Orlando. The engineers said its work won't require any park closings. However, there may be portions of the park that must be closed off.

The Army Corps wants to compare soil samples from the present location to samples where they have found explosives in the past, which will tell the Army Corps how extensively it needs to test.

Byron Jose and his family have lived in Orlando's Englewood neighborhood for 2 years. He said he never worried about living there until the Army Corps of Engineers showed up Friday.

The corps wants to test soil and water samples around Jose's home and 200 others in the Englewood community around the old Orlando range and chemical yard.

"I'm scared something's going to explode. I guess that was a long time ago," said Jose.

The Army Corps of Engineers said they don't expect to find any munitions like those detonated at Orlando's old Pine Castle jeep range. But the corps wants to be sure there are no explosives there.

"The key is to get the Army in as soon as possible to get in there and clean up as soon as possible," said Phil Diamond, City of Orlando.

The responsibility does fall onto the Army Corps of Engineers rather than the city or private homeowners.

"It's good that they're going to test for it," said resident Natalie Martinez.

The Pine Castle jeep range is roughly five miles from the area that will be tested.
