Residents Believe Water Co. Cheats System

Many Seminole County homeowners were testing their drinking water, believing the company that supplies their water was cheating the system.

Aqua Utilities has drawn intense criticism for charging twice the price for undrinkable water.

WFTV reporter Elizabeth Artz talked with homeowners who said their own results were different than the tests Aqua Utilities reported to the government

Their water was tested and the results were toxic, so the family installed a filtration system and it looks like local businesses are going to have to do the same.

For nearly nine months Aqua Utilities supplied bottled water to a Chuluota daycare, Michelle Humphrey found out that supply will be cut off and she is now faced with possibly installing a pricey filtration system. A system similar to the one Diane Twiford put in her home she's very familiar with Humphrey's dilemma.

"If it was my child I would not be comfortable," said resident Diane Twiford.

Aqua Utilities maintains the daycare's water is safe. It uses an annual average of trihalomethane found in the drinking water, the federal government allows for a max of 80 parts per billion.

"I can't guarantee that everyday that we are under 80," said Chris Franklin of Aqua Utilities.

Twiford said she is not confident that Aqua Utilities is getting the numbers honestly. She paid a private company $200 to test the water that flows into her home. The THM level came back at 103, way above federal standards.

She suspects Aqua is flushing the system right before the Department of Environmental Protection samples the water.

"The Department of Environmental Protection regulates the flushing program, approved the flushing program, and processes the samples at a third party laboratory," said Franklin.

But this family isn't buying it and wonders how after 9 months and no apparent upgrades, the daycare's water is meeting federal standards.

"I've lost trust for the company I believe they can do whatever they are going to do to make the number appear better," she said.

WFTV requested the latest test results that show the water is safe, Aqua Utilities sent WFTV to the D.E.P, and Eyewitness News was waiting on the results.
