BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- There is damage on the space shuttle Discovery's heat tiles and engineers are trying to find out if the damage is serious. The astronauts were notified about the issue late Tuesday night before they went to bed. The damage is on the shuttle's left wing. There is a mission management meeting Wednesday to figure out what they need to do about it, in the meantime there was other work to be done.It weighs the same as three full grown elephants, yet when astronauts aboard the space shuttle Discovery lifted the latest addition out of the payload bay, they did it with ease. The crew moved the last set of the space station's giant solar panels toward their final destination. The panels were tucked away inside. While the astronauts were at work in orbit, technicians on the ground were pouring over photographs of their spacecraft. And while discovery rolled end over end as it made its way to the space station, astronauts took pictures of the spacecraft.A close inspection revealed damage to at least one heat shield tile on the left wing flaps.NASA officials said it's too early to tell if they will need a more focused inspection of the damage or if they will take any other measures. Examinations using the shuttle's laser scanning device showed no signs of damage in the critical areas of the heat shield. The astronauts aboard discovery and the space station showed little concern as they answered questions from school children back on earth, telling the kids, "You shouldn't go anywhere without chocolate."WFTV is expecting an update from NASA Wednesday about what their plan is.
