Burglars Steal $250,000 Worth Of Jewelry

Posted: 4:29 pm EDT March 25, 2009Updated: 6:08 pm EDT March 25, 2009

Officers said burglars took off with nearly a $250,000 worth of jewelry Wednesday morning after breaking into a Doctor Phillips jewelry store. The suspects smashed the display cases and grabbed the jewelry.

The store is near the Bay Hill Golf and Country Club in Orange County and was stocked up on expensive jewelry, just in time for the weekend's big golf tournament.

Surveillance cameras caught masked thieves in the act. It took them four minutes to break their way into Bay Hill Jewelers, shatter display cabinets and walk out with at least $250,000 in stolen merchandise.

"I'm hoping we'll be open tomorrow or the day after, but with everything such a disaster it's hard to say," said Stacey Papp of Bay Hill Jewelers.

WFTV asked why such pricey pieces would be left in their display cabinets. The store's owner said she was stocked up for the Bay Hill Invitational. Most of the jewelry was locked away, but several pieces were left within the burglars reach.

"To be honest we don't have the room to put away every single piece. We have a lot of larger pieces that we pull that are higher dollar value," she said.

Papp said the burglary wasn't the first time the store has been hit. In 2005, a man posing as a delivery man asked to be buzzed inside the business. He tied up employees and he and an accomplice made off with the loot. The case was never solved.

Stacey Papp hopes investigators have better luck this time around. But as things stand now she worries she'll be dropped by her insurer and that could put her out of business.

"We may not have been her this time, but it affects our whole lives. I've invested my whole life in this business. And the idea that someone could make me lose my whole life savings is tough to swallow," she said.

WFTV checked with the sheriff's office and found there was a similar smash and grab burglary at a Turkey Lake K-mart in January, where $10,000 in jewelry was snatched from its case.
