Mother Shoots Son, Self At Gun Range

Posted: 7:19 pm EDT April 5, 2009Updated: 4:09 pm EDT April 7, 2009

A mother shot and killed her son and then herself inside a Casselberry gun range Sunday afternoon, according to police.

When Casselberry police arrived at the Shoot Straight Gun Range on South U.S. Highway 17-92 (see map) just after 4:00pm, they found two people had been shot in an apparent murder-suicide.

Police identified the man as 20-year-old Mitchel Moore. The shooter, his mother, was identified as 44-year-old Marie Moore.

There was confusion in the voice of a 911 caller as they tried to explain what happened.

"They were on the shooting range. I'm not sure what happened, somebody got shot," said the caller.

"Male patient? Do you know where he was shot? Two males?" asked the 911 operator.

"Male, I'm sorry, male and female," responded the caller.

In another call, a man told the 911 dispatcher that he believed the shooting was an accident and that one person was shot.

Eyewitnesses said the pair was acting strangely and then the woman ran out of the room to get more ammunition. When she returned, she shot her son and then turned the gun on herself.

Eyewitness Jim Copertino was in shooting target practice next to the pair and said the mother and son appeared hyper and jittery, as if they were on drugs.

"I noticed both of them were very anxious with each other. She kept getting very close to him and he was firing. She was almost over his shoulder," Copertino recalled. "She ran out just prior to that grabbed more ammunition and I watched her do that. The shooting happened right after that."

Eyewitnesses told investigators they never saw the mother arguing with her son. Police are trying to figure out what prompted Marie Moore to suddenly shoot her son in the head and then herself.

Family members did not want to talk, but said that Marie Moore had a history of mental illness and that she was divorced from Mitchel's father. Neighbors described the Moores as a family that appeared to enjoy each other.

"There's got to be something wrong if you could do that. Nothing else got to be something wrong," said neighbor Michael Andrews.

Homicide investigators confirmed the gun she used was rented from the gun range. Investigators also confirmed Marie Moore was committed under Florida's Baker Act in 2002, which allows her to be evaluated for mental illness.

Gun law attorney Jon Gutmacher explained to Eyewitness News why the law still may not have prevented her from operating or owning a gun.

"If there is a loophole anywhere its that people with mental incapacities, short of having been formally committed can own firearms," Gutmacher said.

Gutmacher writes books about Florida gun laws and says just about anyone, with the exception of convicted felons, can carry a gun and the law forbids gun ranges from doing background checks on people who only show up for target practice.

"The only time they're allowed to conduct a records search is when they're selling the firearm," he said.

Gutmacher says most gun ranges require visitors to sign a form, verifying they can legally operate or own a gun.
