Accused Drug Dealer Reports Stolen Drugs

Posted: 5:15 pm EDT April 20, 2009Updated: 6:19 pm EDT April 20, 2009

An accused drug dealer was his own worst enemy. Police say he called 911 when someone stole the pills he was trying to sell along Woodland Boulevard in DeLand. The guy had hundreds of pills and prescriptions for all of them.

The man allegedly had oxycodone, methadone and xanax, but police said he wasn't taking them though; he was selling them. When a deal went bad, he decided to chase the thief into a mobile home park, beat him up, knock over a child and then call police.

Jacob Cole had enough pills to kill his pain for months, alprazolam, diazepam, oxycodone and a stack of prescriptions for more. If he hadn't tried to drive away from a gas station, though, against police orders, investigators may have never known how much Cole had and what he was really doing with all of it.

"Extremely, extremely frustrating. Unfortunately, we have no perimeter fence all the way around the park," resident Chris Hadley said.

The owner of the mobile home park near the gas station wasn't surprised. He said dealers work there all the time. But it wasn't so easy for police to prove Cole was the criminal, not the victim; after all, he had prescriptions for all those drugs.

"We have something like a pill that's lawfully obtained, how do we show, or what do we need to show that the pill, that was lawfully obtained, is being used for illegal purposes?" explained Randell Henderson, DeLand Police Department.

Lucky for police, Cole was carrying a few other items that don't come with a prescription.

"We found a pill crusher inside the car. And we also got testimony from someone who said, yes, the reason he came down to this one location was specifically to sell drugs," Henderson said.

Cole was arrested and taken to the Volusia County jail. He was released on $1,250 bond.
