Massive School Prank Could Lead To Suspensions

Posted: 11:32 am EDT April 22, 2009Updated: 6:36 pm EDT April 22, 2009

Usually, something like a high school prank wouldn't make the news, but this could be one for the record books. Students at Cypress Creek High School broke into portable classrooms and lined their roofs with desks.

Nearly 20 portables were hit by the pranksters overnight and it must have taken some time to pull off. A source told Eyewitness News the prankster students had already rigged window and door jams on Tuesday with little pieces of paper to help them get inside.

It seemed to appear out of nowhere, with some of the mystery of crop circles and all the humor of a high school prank. Video from Skywitness on Wednesday morning showed desks, chairs and even a table or two neatly arranged on the rooftops of more than a dozen portable classrooms at Cypress Creek High School in Orange County.

Cell phone photos Eyewitness News obtained (see images) show a giant teddy bear was the only one who stuck around to admire the handiwork.

"What did you think about that?" WFTV reporter Eric Rasmussen asked a student.

"It's good, good," he said.

"It's good?" Rasmussen questioned.

"Yeah," the student said as he walked off, commenting that he was late.

That student wasn't talking, but members of the school's campus news team had plenty to say.

"It was funny, but I think we could've done a little bit better," one student said.

"Okay, you can come clean right now, were you part of it?" Rasmussen asked the student.

"No, not at all. I was sleeping," the student said.

"We are investigating what appears to be a senior prank," Principal Susan Storch said. "Unfortunately, what may have been meant as harmless fun resulted in a significant disruption to our school day."

Principal Storch told Eyewitness News the rules are clear and kids, as well as staff, could've gotten hurt up on the roofs of the portables, but students and even some of their parents wonder if keeping them out of graduation ceremonies is too much.

"I don't know if it cost money to anybody, that's the sad part, but other than that, I think it's pretty funny. Sorry," parent Juan Morales said.

"Some might look at this as a prank. Do you think the punishment you're talking about is too severe?" WFTV reporter Eric Rasmussen asked Principal Storch.

"No, I do not. No, I do not. My staff members were at risk," Storch said.

She's referring to staff members who helped move the furniture back inside before classes started Wednesday.

It's not clear if anyone at the district's 24-hour security control room should've caught the pranksters in the act on surveillance cameras, but video from those cameras is being reviewed in an attempt to identify those responsible. Some students told Eyewitness News they should save the tough questions for those in charge of security.

"If there was security at night time then I doubt the kids would be able to climb on top of a portable and put chairs on it," student Erik Jefferson said.

Students at the school told Eyewitness News there may have been as many as 25 kids involved. Late Wednesday afternoon, some students told Eyewitness News at least one kid was caught, but the school won't confirm who or how many are being held responsible. The principal is promising suspensions and said any seniors involved may not be allowed to walk at graduation.

The sheriff's office, though, said it's not getting involved because there was no real damage.
